Ramana’s only regret: ‘Couldn’t focus much on prompt listing of new cases’ | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: On his last day in office, CJI N V Ramana on Friday said his only regret was that he could not pay “much attention” to prompt listing of fresh cases filed by litigants and added that CJI-designate U U Lalit, who will take oath as 49th CJI on Saturday, has promised to endeavour and make the listing system expeditious and transparent.
Speaking at the farewell function, CJI Ramana said, “We have to admit the fact that pendency is a huge challenge before us. I must admit that issues of listing and posting of matters is one of the areas on which I could not pay much attention. We were busy fire-fighting on a daily basis. All sides are equal contributors to this problem. The only way out for this is to reform the functioning of the system.”
He said the SC needs to deploy modern tools and employ artificial intelligence to find a lasting solution to this vexed problem of delay in listing of fresh cases, much to the anguish of lawyers.

Justice Lalit said in his 74-day tenure as CJI he would strive hard to make the listing process for fresh cases as simple, effective, quick and transparent as possible. “I will look into this issue and discuss with my colleagues to come out with a regime for free mentioning of urgent cases before concerned benches,” he said.
Hours before ending his 16-month tenure, CJI Ramana, with CJI-designate Lalit and Justice Hima Kohli by his side, witnessed a spectacle with a smile as dramatis personae Kapil Sibal and Dushyant Dave enlivened the legal theatre with their confessions before a mass of lawyers.
Starting with attorney general K K Venugopal, everyone, gave credit to Justice Ramana for tirelessly using his persuasive skills to fill more than 250 vacant HC judge posts and over 100 posts in the tribunals.
Solicitor general Tushar Mehta referred to Justice Ramana as a “karta” (head) of larger legal fraternity who discharged his role well .
Sibal, who had on August 6 said “after 50 years of legal practice, I feel I have no hopes from the institution (SC)”, paid glowing tributes to the acumen of Justice Ramana, crediting him with skilfully sailing the boat of judiciary safely through turbulent times.
But the most dramatic moment came when senior advocate Dave admitted with a choked voice how he grievously erred in assessing Justice Ramana when he took over as CJI and wrote a critical article. “You have been a true citizen’s judge,” he said while singing paeans for Justice Ramana.
