Panel examining raising women’s marriage age gets 3-month extension | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: The parliamentary standing committee scrutinising the proposed amendment to the law to raise the legal age of marriage for women from 18 to 21 years has been given yet another extension to submit its report. The deadline for presentation of the report that was extended in June till July 24 has been further extended for three months till October 24.
The panel on women, children, youth and sports affairs, which is examining the provisions of the Prohibition of Child Marriage (Amendment) Bill, 2021, was originally given three months till March and then it got an extension till June 24.
The month long extension given in June came just ahead of the six year Rajya Sabha tenure of the committee’s chairman from BJP, Vinay Sahasrabuddhe ending on July 4. A new chairman is yet to be nominated.
After introducing the bill on December 21 in the winter session of Parliament in the Lok Sabha amid protests from the opposition, women and child development minister Smriti Irani had sought that the bill be referred to a parliamentary standing committee for further scrutiny.
Thereafter the standing committee then led by Sahasrabuddhe was charged with the task to examine the bill which according to the government proposes to amend the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006, “to reinforce its application in relation to marriage; bring women at par with men.”
