Non-local voters in J&K: NC calls all-party meet; Mehbooba says ‘last nail in coffin of democracy’ | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: The Election Commission‘s announcement that non-locals will be allowed to vote in Jammu and Kashmir drew a sharp reaction from both National Conference and PDP.
NC president Farooq Abdullah, head of People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD), has convened an all-party meeting in Srinagar on August 22 to discuss the issue.
J&K chief electoral officer Hirdesh Kumar had on Wednesday said that electorate could swell by 20 to 25 lakh new voters after the ongoing special summary revision of electoral rolls, adding that people from other states living in the Union Territory will also be eligible to vote.

NC state spokesperson Imran Nabi Dar said that Abdullah has spoken to the mainstream political parties in the Union Territory and invited them to join the meeting.
Former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti said her party will oppose and fight the decision to allow voting rights to non-locals in Jammu and Kashmir.
She said the move of the election authorities to allow outsiders residing ordinarily in Jammu and Kashmir for jobs, education or business to register as voters was the “last nail in the coffin of democracy here”.
According to the Election Commission’s rescheduled timeline, an integrated draft electoral roll will be published on September 15, while the period for filing claims and objections has been fixed between September 15 and October 25. Disposal of claims and objections are to be completed by November 10.
