After a 109-run stand between Mark Chapman and Martin Guptill, Ravichandran Ashwin struck twice in an over that brought India back into the game. Chapman was clean bowled by Ashwin after the left-hander smashed his first T20I fifty playing for New Zealand while Guptill is still going strong against the Indian bowlers. Apart from Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar is the only wicket-taker among the Indian bowlers as the pacer removed Daryl Mitchell in the first over of the match. Earlier Venkatesh Iyer got his T20I debut cap for India while Shreyas Iyer, Mohammed Siraj, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Axar Patel and Deepak Chahar came back in the playing XI. New Zealand made four changes in their side that played the T20 World Cup final last Sunday- Mark Chapman, Todd Astle and Lokie Ferguson come back in the XI. India failed to qualify for the final four at the recently concluded T20 World Cup where New Zealand finished as the runners-up following an eight-wicket defeat to Australia in the final. The marquee tournament was Virat Kohli’s last as T20I skipper and also the final assignment for former head coach Ravi Shastri. On the other hand, New Zealand are without their regular skipper Kane Williamson who will directly join the Test side after the conclusion of the T20Is. In Williamson’s absence, Tim Southee has been named as stand-in skipper for the first T20I. (LIVE SCORECARD)
